Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan sees strong growth opportunities for India’s textile industry. He highlighted the role of international trade developments and government initiatives in supporting the sector.

He spoke at the inauguration of a new academic block at the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Salem. He said recent trade developments could create new opportunities for Indian textile exporters.

Trade Developments May Support Textile Exports

Radhakrishnan highlighted recent developments, including reduced taxation in the United States and India’s free trade agreement with European countries. He said these changes could improve opportunities for Indian textile businesses.

He also pointed to the need for India to strengthen its position against major textile-producing countries such as China and Bangladesh. Better market access and stronger manufacturing capabilities could help Indian exporters compete globally.

Salem’s Handloom Heritage Remains Important

The Vice President praised Salem’s rich handloom heritage and recognised the contributions of its weaving community. He stressed the importance of preserving traditional weaving practices.

At the same time, he called for greater investment in modern skills. These skills can help weavers meet international quality standards and respond to changing market needs.

Government Initiatives Aim to Strengthen the Sector

Radhakrishnan highlighted the Central Government’s efforts to support the textile industry. These initiatives aim to improve competitiveness, raise productivity and create better opportunities for textile workers and entrepreneurs.

He also stressed the need for continuous skill development. Weavers must upgrade their capabilities to keep pace with global standards and changing consumer expectations.

The Vice President also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development initiatives, including the Smart City Mission. He noted that several cities in Tamil Nadu have benefited from infrastructure and urban development projects.

IIHT Salem Can Support Industry Development

Radhakrishnan urged the textile industry to make greater use of the facilities and resources at IIHT Salem. He also encouraged efforts to seek further Central Government support for the institute’s educational and technical infrastructure.

He expressed confidence that policy support, improved market access and skill development would help India’s textile industry grow. These efforts could also improve livelihoods for weavers and textile workers across the country.

India’s textile industry continues to focus on stronger manufacturing capabilities, export growth and wider access to international markets. The Vice President’s remarks highlighted the importance of combining traditional expertise with modern skills to support the sector’s future development.
