RAI Advocacy Update: UP Caps Stamp Duty on Lease and Rental Agreements

The Retailers Association of India (RAI) welcomed the Uttar Pradesh Government’s move to cap stamp duty and registration fees on lease deeds. The decision provides major relief to retail and commercial businesses.

RAI noted that high and unpredictable stamp duty charges discouraged formal tenancy registrations and created financial challenges for retailers. This reform removes a key barrier.

Key Advantage

Under the new structure, stamp duty and registration fees are capped based on:

  • Lease duration

  • Average annual rent

This change reduces costs for retailers and improves ease of doing business in the state.
