Sorona®, the pioneering partially bio-based polymer brand from Covation Biomaterials, celebrates its 25th anniversary at Intertextile Shanghai 2025 with two major announcements: the appointment of Steven Ackerman as CEO of CovationBio and the release of updated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results.
The third-party reviewed LCA confirms Sorona®’s environmental advantages over conventional synthetics: 44% lower energy use and 170% fewer emissions compared to nylon 6, 41% fewer emissions versus PET, and measurable gains over PBT. These improvements reflect ongoing investments in hydropower, local corn sourcing, and advanced cogeneration systems.
Ackerman emphasized Sorona®’s commitment to combining high performance with sustainability: softness, durability, and stretch recovery remain core strengths across apparel, home textiles, and faux fur applications. With a legacy spanning partnerships with Mohawk Industries, Stella McCartney, and over 350 certified mills worldwide, Sorona® continues to set benchmarks for renewable innovation.
The 25-year milestone also highlights the brand’s evolution: from launching the world’s first PTT polymer in 2000 to debuting sub-brands like Agile, Aura, and Luxe, and creating global supply chain transparency programs. With Ackerman at the helm, CovationBio aims to drive the next era of renewable chemistry and responsible textile innovation.
