Serena Williams, tennis legend and style icon, shared her journey of using fashion as a form of self-expression from a young age as she accepted the Fashion Icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Speaking to a glamorous fashion industry audience, she revealed how, growing up in the public eye, she turned tennis courts into her runway.

As the first athlete to receive the prestigious Fashion Icon award, Williams was presented with the honor by Kim Kardashian, who praised her as “fearless, heroic, authentic, iconic—the greatest of all time.” The award ceremony, akin to the fashion industry’s Oscar night, took place at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan and was hosted by Anne Hathaway.

In addition to Serena Williams, other notable figures in the fashion world were recognized. Catherine Holstein of Khaite was named womenswear designer of the year, Willy Chavarria won for menswear, and Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen of The Row received the accessories award. Gwyneth Paltrow accepted the Innovation award for goop, her lifestyle brand, and Vera Wang was honored for her impact on the bridal industry.

The evening included a tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with a short film directed by Hype Williams, introduced by Mary J. Blige and featuring music by Pharrell. Serena Williams, now 42 and retired from tennis, shared her creative journey on the court, designing unconventional outfits and expressing her individuality. She thanked her mother for sewing her first tennis outfits and emphasized the importance of embracing creativity.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Serena Williams has made strides in the fashion industry, studying fashion during her tennis career and launching the “S by Serena” clothing line in 2018. In her acceptance speech, she highlighted her clothing line’s mission to inspire women to embrace their bodies regardless of size, race, or income.

The CFDA awards, presented by Amazon Fashion, recognized individuals across various categories, including media, sustainability, and international contributions. Serena Williams’ recognition as a Fashion Icon solidifies her impact on the intersection of sports and style, leaving an enduring legacy in the world of fashion.
