New York Fashion Week begins on Friday, with designers exhibiting their spring/summer collections, including historical labels such as Tommy Hilfiger and newcomers like Mexican designer Patricio Campillo.
Campillo will make his New York Fashion Week debut on Saturday at the Public Hotel with a men’s collection inspired by Mexican volcanoes and their ability to “modify a space.”

“The brand’s patterns are based on a suit that my grandfather gave my dad when my dad turned 18, and this suit was given to me a few years ago,” stated Campillo at the time.

Negotiating his career as a self-taught designer had been challenging without the support of another Mexican designer who had previously broken through, he said, adding that he hoped his success would help those who followed.

“Mexico is a place full of talent, full of people willing to work, and I believe that nobody grows alone,” says Campillo.

Campillo has already received accolades and celebrity clientele, and fashion and beauty journalist Asia Milia Ware of New York Magazine’s The Cut predicts that his NYFW debut will garner even more notice.

“The right eyes can land you into a retailer, which is a big goal for a lot of these designers,” she informed me. “Or the proper eyes from an editor can land you publicity, whether it’s a cover or a feature, which can be extremely dynamic and life-changing for these designers. So, it’s a significant moment.”

This season there are approximately 60 designers on the official calendar, with many more off-calendar.

Ware stated that the most anticipated shows were Alaia and Off-White. “They normally show in Paris, but this year they’re showing in New York, and they’re like the two hottest tickets to get in the city this season,” she told me.
She expected that bold reds and strong shoulders would be the collection’s primary motifs.
