Nike’s Aerogami Jacket, developed in collaboration between the Nike Explore Team (NXT) and the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL), showcases the introduction of Aerogami, a groundbreaking apparel technology. Motivated by a deep passion for catering to runners’ needs, scientists and innovators have developed Aerogami to provide on-demand ventilation, ultimately creating more breathable performance gear.
Aerogami operates as an adaptive venting system that responds to the wearer’s requirements in real time. The primary objective is to ensure optimal breathability throughout the duration of physical activity, taking into account the body’s fluctuations in temperature and sweat production.
The functionality of Aerogami lies in its tiny winged vents that open as sweat accumulates against the skin, facilitating better airflow and allowing the sweat to escape. Conversely, these vents close up when the body cools down and sweat dries. This remarkable capability is made possible by a moisture-reactive film applied to the vents, enabling independent contraction and expansion in response to sweat detection on the body.
The Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket prominently showcases this venting system across the chest and back of the garment, as these areas tend to generate more heat and sweat during running. By strategically placing the vents, the jacket enables efficient airflow while in motion.
Extensive testing in the NSRL’s environmental chambers, combined with the analysis of heat and sweat maps from runners, has ensured that the vent placement is optimized for both women’s and men’s jackets. Gender-specific considerations have been taken into account, such as incorporating vents around the area where a sports bra sits in the women’s jacket.
Jahan Behbahany, Senior Apparel Innovation Product Manager in Nike’s Advanced Innovation Collective, emphasizes that Aerogami exemplifies Nike’s commitment to runner-centric innovation. The aim is to address the common challenges faced by runners, including discomfort and distraction caused by overheating while wearing a running jacket. The innovative solution not only improves breathability but also maintains style and protection. Furthermore, the benefits of the technology are not only felt by the athlete but can also be visually observed.
In addition to the revolutionary Aerogami technology, the Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket incorporates Storm-FIT ADV, a premium performance-apparel material designed to shield runners from wind and rain.
Mark your calendars for July 2023 when the highly anticipated release of the Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket for women will hit the shelves of select retailers and be available for purchase on nike.com. The men’s jacket will follow suit later this autumn. With the introduction of Aerogami, Nike continues to push the boundaries of innovation, catering to the evolving needs of runners while prioritizing both performance and style.
