Milano Unica Unveils MU METAMORPHOSIS for SS28

Milano Unica has unveiled MU METAMORPHOSIS, its creative concept for Spring-Summer 2028 textile and accessories collections. The concept explores how lifestyles, consumer habits and environmental concerns are changing fashion.

It also highlights three key themes: lightness, craftsmanship and adaptability. Together, they offer a fresh approach to materials, design and product development.

“The Milano Unica Sustainability Trends concept stems from our desire to provide the fashion industry with a practical tool for understanding and anticipating changes in fashion, society and the environment. Our role is to showcase the excellence of textile production and accessories, and to create content and services that guide businesses and industry professionals in their decision-making processes. In doing so, we foster dialogue between creativity, craftsmanship and innovation. MU METAMORPHOSIS embodies this ethos and translates it into a presentation of the Spring–Summer 2028 collections, offering a contemporary vision that remains deeply rooted in the product’s cultural identity,” affirmed Simone Canclini, President of Milano Unica.

A New Approach to Fashion Materials

MU METAMORPHOSIS reflects a shift in how people live, shop and value products. Today, fashion is moving beyond excess. Instead, it focuses on comfort, purpose and long-lasting value.

As a result, fabrics and technologies must meet real needs. They must also support flexible wardrobes that work across seasons and settings.

«Change does not imply renouncing one’s identity, but rather evolving, as nature teaches us. The real challenge in fashion, as in life, is to evolve responsibly in order to create authentic, enduring value,» explained Stefano Fadda, Artistic Director of Milano Unica.

Materials are changing to meet these needs. Fabrics are becoming lighter and more versatile. At the same time, production is placing greater value on craftsmanship and technical innovation.

Wool is also moving beyond its traditional role in winter clothing. For example, ultra-fine yarns and airy textures make it suitable for warmer weather. These developments also support wardrobes that can be worn across seasons.

Milano Unica’s concept follows three main principles:

  • Lightness: Removing unnecessary weight and design elements.
  • Enrichment: Highlighting craftsmanship, fine details and texture.
  • Adaptability: Creating versatile designs for city life, travel, outdoor activities, home and hybrid working.

Three Textile Trend Directions for Spring-Summer 2028

1. LIGHTWEAR: The Metamorphosis of Lightness

LIGHTWEAR focuses on freedom, comfort and movement. For SS28, luxury is expressed through lightweight materials and fluid designs. These fabrics move naturally with the body and offer greater comfort.

Key materials: Ultra-light wool and wool-silk blends, cotton, linen, matte silk, fluid crepe, viscose, organza, summer-weight cashmere, tropical wool, cotton mousseline and voile.

Processes and finishes: Soft-touch and peach-effect washes, controlled creasing, layered transparencies, micro-pleating and lightweight fil coupé.

Accessories: Matte ultralight nylon zippers, mother-of-pearl and horn buttons, transparent bioresin buttons, lightweight tapes and minimalist jacquard labels.

Colour palette: Mist Grey, Rosy Linen and Muted Sage form the softer base. Meanwhile, Sunny Yellow, Aqua Green and Radiant Lilac add brighter accents. White completes the palette.

2. HANDWEAR: The Metamorphosis of Craftsmanship

HANDWEAR puts craftsmanship at the centre of modern luxury. It moves beyond nostalgia by giving traditional techniques a fresh purpose. Through texture, raised details and careful finishing, even simple materials can gain new character.

Key materials: Lightweight handcrafted wool, compact cotton with raised embroidery, reworked denim and drill, irregular jacquards, heavyweight woven fabrics, quilted materials and three-dimensional knits.

Processes and finishes: Three-dimensional embroidery, raised effects, embossing, braiding, macramé, decorative stitching, raw edges, patchwork, visible repairs and textured prints.

Accessories: Satin-finish metal zippers with handcrafted pull tabs, braided cords, buttons made from wood, corozo, ceramic or etched metal, embroidered tapes and fabric-patch labels.

Colour palette: Ocean Blue and Purple combine with Taupe and Wicker. In addition, Lavender and Clay bring softer tones to the range. Black adds contrast and strengthens the overall palette.

3. TECHWEAR: The Metamorphosis of Protection

TECHWEAR explores how technology can improve everyday clothing without becoming the main focus. Lightweight materials and protective finishes support comfort, movement and versatility.

This approach brings outdoor wear, travel clothing and remote-working wardrobes closer together. As a result, consumers can choose practical pieces for different settings.

Key materials: Lightweight technical wool blends, active-wool, nylon, ultra-light polyamide, resilient stretch fabrics, recycled polyester, breathable membranes, UV-protective fabrics and soft-touch microfibres.

Processes and finishes: Subtle iridescent laminations, laser-cut details, heat-sealed seams, reflective surfaces, micro-perforations and water-repellent coatings.

Accessories: Gel-coated zippers with matte or gunmetal finishes, lightweight magnetic press studs made from moulded TPU, technical mesh, reflective tapes, elastic tapes and silicone heat-transfer labels with integrated QR codes.

Colour palette: Vermilion Red and Electric Green bring strong colour to the range. Meanwhile, Melon and Iridescence add luminous effects. Tobacco and Caramel provide warmer contrasts, while Deep Red creates a bold finish.

A Future of Flexible and Functional Fashion

Through MU METAMORPHOSIS, Milano Unica presents its vision for Spring-Summer 2028. The concept connects material innovation with craftsmanship and changing consumer needs.

LIGHTWEAR, HANDWEAR and TECHWEAR offer three clear directions for the season. Together, they highlight lighter fabrics, richer textures and practical technology. Ultimately, the focus is on creating textiles and accessories that offer comfort, versatility and lasting value.
