Khadi & Upcycling 2026: Connecting Tradition, Creativity and Sustainable Living

The Alumni Association of the College of Home Science, Nirmala Niketan, in collaboration with Anveshanam Foundation, is set to host “Khadi & Upcycling 2026 – Seminar and Workshop” on Saturday, 26 September 2026, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Marie Adelaide de Cice College Hall, College of Home Science Nirmala Niketan, Churchgate, Mumbai.

The programme will explore the intersection of khadi, textile upcycling, natural skincare and entrepreneurship, offering participants an opportunity to connect traditional knowledge with practical approaches to sustainable living and responsible consumption.

A key highlight will be a fabric jewellery-making demonstration, showcasing how pre-consumer textile waste can be creatively transformed into attractive and useful products. Participants will also have the opportunity to create and take home one handmade fabric jewellery piece, gaining hands-on experience with basic upcycling techniques.

The workshop will demonstrate how discarded textile materials can be converted into value-added products while encouraging circularity and more responsible approaches to consumption.

The programme will also feature a Natural Skin Care demonstration, focusing on the preparation of lip butter and lipstick using simple ingredients. The session will introduce participants to accessible methods of creating everyday personal-care products while encouraging mindful and sustainable practices.

The seminar will further examine Khadi and MSME opportunities. Participants will receive a hands-on introduction to hand spinning, accompanied by discussions on the importance of khadi and its continuing relevance in contemporary society.

A dedicated MSME session will provide insights into MSME registration, government schemes, financial assistance and opportunities for starting or expanding small businesses. The session aims to help participants understand the support available for developing entrepreneurial ideas and livelihood opportunities.

With sustainability, creativity and entrepreneurship at its core, Khadi & Upcycling 2026 aims to demonstrate how traditional skills and contemporary innovation can contribute to responsible consumption, sustainable practices and economic empowerment.

The programme is being curated by Dr. Ela Manoj Dedhia, Director, Anveshanam Foundation, with Textile Jagat, Journal of Textile Association and Textile Value Chain as media partners.

The event is open to students, homemakers, professionals, educators, entrepreneurs and anyone interested in khadi, sustainable fashion, upcycling and natural products. Participation is priced at ₹500 per person.
