2024 marked a pivotal year for Indian fashion, transcending its historical role as a manufacturing hub to firmly establish itself as a vibrant centre of design, innovation, and global influence. While international trends like “brat summer,” minimalist bridal looks, and the resurgence of animal prints dominated the global fashion landscape, India carved its own distinct narrative, marked by high-profile collaborations, red carpet moments, and a renewed focus on artisanal craftsmanship.

From Manufacturing to Muse: India’s Design Renaissance

A key theme of 2024 was the resolute effort by Indian designers to shift the global perception of India from a manufacturing powerhouse to a wellspring of creative talent. This ambition manifested in several significant ways:

  • Star-Studded Collaborations: A flurry of collaborations with international brands underscored India’s growing influence. Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s limited-edition lipstick range with Estée Lauder, packaged in 24-carat gold, became a global sell-out. H&M partnered with Anamika Khanna, blending her signature fusion of glamour and craftsmanship with contemporary silhouettes. Rahul Mishra joined forces with Tod’s, merging Italian minimalism with intricate Indian embroidery. Even Barbie joined the party, sporting a traditional Indian ensemble designed by Anita Dongre. These partnerships not only showcased Indian design on a global platform but also injected significant cultural capital into the industry.
  • Red Carpet Reign: Indian designers made a powerful statement on the international red carpet. The Met Gala saw a significant Indian presence, with designers like Gaurav Gupta, Rahul Mishra, and Tarun Tahiliani showcasing their creations. Sabyasachi’s red carpet debut, alongside Alia Bhatt in a custom sari, was a particularly momentous occasion. These appearances cemented Indian designers’ place within the global fashion elite.
  • Global Expansion: Indian brands continued their international expansion, with designers like Gaurav Gupta gaining shelf space at prestigious retailers like Neiman Marcus. This strategic move towards an international retail presence further solidified India’s position in the global market.

The Ambani Wedding: A Showcase of Indian Craftsmanship

The extravagant wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant served as a grand showcase of India’s rich artisanal heritage. From bespoke ensembles by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, incorporating art and sculpture, to intricate jewellery by Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas, the wedding highlighted the depth and breadth of Indian craftsmanship, further emphasizing India’s contribution to the world of design and fashion.

Beyond the Runway: Global Visibility and Cultural Impact

Indian design extended its reach beyond the runway and red carpet, making appearances in popular culture:

  • Celebrity Endorsements: International celebrities like Janelle Monáe, Adele, and Beyoncé were spotted wearing creations by Indian designers, amplifying their global visibility.
  • On-Screen Presence: Indian jewellery and fashion made appearances in popular shows like “Emily in Paris” and the upcoming season of “The White Lotus,” further integrating Indian aesthetics into mainstream media.

Challenges and Opportunities: A Look Ahead

Despite the significant progress, the Indian fashion industry faces ongoing challenges:

  • Archiving and Preservation: The lack of comprehensive archives remains a critical issue, hindering the documentation and preservation of India’s rich fashion history.
  • Size Inclusivity: The industry continues to struggle with genuine size inclusivity, often resorting to tokenism rather than embracing diverse body types.
  • Sustainability: While global conversations around sustainable practices are gaining momentum, concrete and transparent plans for eco-conscious production are still lacking within the Indian fashion landscape.

Despite these challenges, 2024 undeniably marked a turning point for Indian fashion. By prioritizing design, craftsmanship, and global collaboration, the industry has successfully positioned itself as a key player on the world stage. As Indian designers continue to push boundaries and embrace innovation, the future of Indian fashion looks brighter than ever.
