BTRA and MIDC Partner to Set Up India’s First Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant
The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish India’s first 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at PM MITRA Park in Amravati, Maharashtra.
The agreement marks a significant milestone for India’s advanced materials and technical textiles sector, supporting the country’s efforts to strengthen domestic carbon fibre manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.
The MoU was exchanged between Dr. P. Anbalagan, IAS, Principal Secretary (Industries, Investment & Services), Government of Maharashtra, and Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director, BTRA, in the presence of Dr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman, BTRA.
The proposed facility will serve as a National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development and will include:
- A 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant
- Advanced Research and Development Centre
- Testing and Characterisation Laboratory
- Technology Validation and Scale-up Facility
- Skill Development and Training Centre
- Industry Support and Technology Transfer Platform
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial-scale manufacturing by enabling pilot production, technology validation, product development and industrial adoption of indigenous carbon fibre technology.
Carbon fibre is a strategic material widely used across aerospace, defence, automotive, renewable energy, railways, infrastructure, hydrogen storage, pressure vessels and sports equipment. The new facility is expected to strengthen India’s manufacturing capabilities, promote import substitution and conserve foreign exchange by supporting domestic production.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director of BTRA, said the project would accelerate indigenous technology development while encouraging industry-academia collaboration, supporting startups and MSMEs, and creating a skilled workforce for India’s advanced composites ecosystem.
The project aligns with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, and PM MITRA initiatives, promoting innovation, high-value manufacturing and sustainable industrial development.
The collaboration also reinforces Maharashtra’s position as a key destination for advanced manufacturing and innovation, while strengthening BTRA’s long-standing contribution to textile research, technical textiles, testing and technology development.
With this initiative, BTRA and MIDC aim to lay the foundation for a robust indigenous carbon fibre ecosystem and position India among the world’s leading centres for advanced composite technologies.
