Amit Aggarwal Expands Retail Presence with Kala Ghoda Flagship

Amit Aggarwal has opened a new flagship store in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda, marking a significant step in the evolution of the fashion house’s retail and business presence.

Located within one of Mumbai’s established cultural and luxury precincts, the 6,000-square-foot, two-level store brings the brand’s complete universe together under one roof.

Architect Niket Deshpande has designed the space to translate Amit Aggarwal’s distinctive approach to form, material and light into a new architectural language.

A Monolithic Space Shaped by Light and Material

The store follows a restrained material palette built around concrete and sculptural forms.

Curves meet linear structures throughout the space. At the same time, light and shadow create depth across the predominantly monochromatic interiors.

The design aims to create a sense of stillness amid the movement of Kala Ghoda. As visitors enter, the quieter environment encourages them to slow down and focus on the collections.

Consequently, the architecture remains understated while colour, silhouettes, textiles and craftsmanship take centre stage.

The 13-Foot Pod Creates a Central Focus

At the heart of the flagship sits a 13-foot suspended pod.

The form has appeared repeatedly in Amit Aggarwal’s visual language. Here, it represents ideas of origin, containment and transformation.

Furthermore, the pod creates a central architectural anchor around which the different areas of the store unfold.

The heritage structure presented its own set of challenges. The windowless, split-level building retains exposed metal girders, structural elements, projections and irregular geometry.

Rather than conceal these features, the design team incorporated them into the spatial experience. This approach allows the building’s existing character to become part of the store’s identity.

On the exterior, one of Amit Aggarwal’s signature emblems appears as sculptural crests instead of conventional storefront windows. This creates a subtle visual presence within the historic streetscape.

Inside, the textured, monochromatic treatment creates a cave-like atmosphere. As a result, the intricate surfaces and fluid forms of the collections remain the primary focus.

Architect Explains the Design Approach

Niket Deshpande, Architect, Thotpot Designs, says:

“Design, for me, is a process of discovery. My job was to deep dive in Amit’s unspoken, his gestures and his personality to appropriate an inspiring space for his creations.” He adds, “The architecture, just like Amit’s collection, is designed to move you.”

The new flagship also represents an evolution in Amit Aggarwal’s approach to retail design.

Earlier stores explored ideas around birth, perception and absence. In comparison, the Kala Ghoda space takes a more absorbed and considered approach.

Here, the architecture establishes an atmosphere while allowing the collections to lead the experience.

Complete Amit Aggarwal Universe Under One Roof

The Kala Ghoda store is the largest Amit Aggarwal space to date.

It is also the first flagship to bring the house’s complete portfolio together in one location. The store includes Womenswear Couture, Menswear Couture, Womenswear Occasionwear, Accessories and the revived prêt line, AM.IT.

Each category occupies a distinct area within the two-level store. However, the stepped layout maintains a visual connection between the different expressions of the brand.

Surajit Ranjan Das, Art & Design Consultant, Studio Guniya, says:

“The space reimagines traditional retail architecture by transforming an unconventional, windowless heritage building into a monochromatic sanctuary. By fusing heritage architecture with spatial installations, the Kala Ghoda flagship offers a distinct, unexpected retail experience that aligns seamlessly with Amit Aggarwal’s parametric design language.”

The larger footprint reflects the fashion house’s expanding range of categories and markets. It also allows customers to experience the different collections as part of one unified brand world.

Kala Ghoda Becomes the Next Retail Destination

The move to Kala Ghoda marks both a natural and strategic step for Amit Aggarwal.

In recent years, the neighbourhood has strengthened its position as a destination for luxury, fashion, art and design. Therefore, the store places the brand within an established cultural ecosystem.

Its prominent main-road location also gives the house greater visibility. Meanwhile, the larger space provides room for its expanding retail and category ambitions.

Amit Aggarwal said:

“Kala Ghoda felt like a natural next step for us. It is a neighbourhood where fashion, art, design and culture have always existed in close conversation, and that felt aligned with the world we are building at Amit Aggarwal. This flagship gives us the scale to bring the different expressions of the house together, while also allowing us to grow into a space that feels relevant to where the brand is today and where it is going next.”

A New Chapter for the Fashion House

The new Kala Ghoda flagship represents a deliberate step in Amit Aggarwal’s next phase of growth.

Beyond expanding its physical retail presence, the store creates a larger platform for the house’s couture, occasionwear, accessories and prêt offerings.

At the same time, its architectural approach reflects the brand’s focus on form, material, colour and craftsmanship.

The Amit Aggarwal Kala Ghoda store is now open in Mumbai.
