In collaboration with bluesign®, the Apparel, Made-Ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) introduced the Foundation to Apparel Sustainability eLearning Course. The occasion, which took place in Bangalore’s Hotel ITC Windsor, is a major turning point in the promotion of ethical and sustainable business practices in India’s textile and clothing sector.
The textile and clothing industry in India plays a significant role in the country’s economy, accounting for 18% of industrial production and 2% of the GDP. 45 million people are directly employed by it, and 60 million more are supported by related industries. India is the fifth-largest exporter in the world, which emphasizes how critical it is that this industry thrive sustainably.
Prominent industry figures attended the inauguration ceremony, including Dr. Vijay Yadav, CEO of AMHSSC, Ms. Katharina Verena Mayer, Director of Customer Relations at bluesign technologies, and Chief Guest Shri Naren Goenka, Founder of Tex Export Industries Ltd. The customary lamp-lighting ritual, which represents the dedication to a sustainable future, kicked off the celebration.
The Bluesign® Academy and AMHSSC are collaborating to produce the Foundation to Apparel Sustainability Course, which will launch in September 2024. The course will be delivered in an eight-week online module format with one e-learning session each week. With an emphasis on the Indian market, it seeks to offer a thorough examination of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues in the textile sector. The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India promised to achieve Net Zero by 2070, and this course will help that goal by giving business executives the know-how and abilities they need to adopt sustainable practices.
The course’s objective is to give learners practical knowledge they may apply straight away in manufacturing settings. It was created with middle and senior management in the apparel sector in mind, giving them the opportunity to drive conscious change and support India’s rise to prominence in the world of sustainability. Topics covered include an overview of sustainable fashion, the background of the fashion industry, environmentally friendly textile manufacturing techniques, sustainable fibers, impact and footprint evaluations, chemical management and hazard assessments, social and ethical issues in sustainable clothing, and sustainability reporting.
This endeavor not only aligns with global standards and the increasing preferences of consumers for sustainable and ethical products, but it also sets new standards for ethical business practices in India’s textile and apparel industry. Bangalore will be greatly impacted by this online school as well since it will position the city as a hub for eco-friendly fashion.
“This course is a landmark initiative in our journey towards making the Indian textile and apparel industry a global leader in sustainability,” said Padma Shri Dr. A Sakthivel, Chairman of AMHSSC. It illustrates our dedication to providing our employees with the know-how and abilities needed to implement sustainable practices.”
Ms. Katharina Verena Mayer, Bluesign Technologies’ Director of Customer Relations for South Asia, stated: “Bluesign® is delighted to work with AMHSSC on this crucial training. Our objective is to promote ethical manufacturing methods and sustainable innovation in the sector, guaranteeing a brighter future for everybody.”
“By launching this eLearning course, we are not only raising awareness but also providing practical solutions for sustainability in the apparel sector,” stated Dr. Vijay Yadav, CEO of AMHSSC. The industry will be greatly impacted by this project since it will promote a sustainable culture and moral corporate conduct.
All parties involved in the textile and garment industry are cordially invited to attend this groundbreaking course by bluesign® and the AMHSSC. By working together, we can guarantee the industry’s sustainability, which will benefit not just companies but also the environment and society as a whole.
