YKK Corporation has introduced YZiP® Light, a next-generation lightweight aluminum alloy zipper designed specifically for cotton pants, with global sales commencing in late March 2026.
Expanding its YZiP® portfolio, the new zipper offers a significant performance upgrade, delivering approximately 50 percent weight reduction compared to conventional YZiP® copper alloy zippers used in denim. The innovation also improves usability, with sliding resistance reduced by around 15 percent and lateral pull strength enhanced by approximately 26 percent over traditional aluminum alloy zippers.
Engineered for garments with fabric thickness of 0.6 millimetres or less, YZiP® Light is optimised for cotton apparel that does not require washing processes. The product integrates YKK’s proprietary aluminum molding technology, enabling precise press processing of aluminum, a material traditionally considered difficult to shape. This advancement ensures the zipper maintains the same functionality and aesthetic appeal as the semi-automatic slider used in copper alloy variants.
In addition to performance improvements, YKK has introduced advanced colouring capabilities for aluminum elements, expanding design options beyond standard silver finishes to include gold and antique gold variations. This enhances flexibility for brands seeking both functional and visual differentiation in garment design.
Sustainability remains a key focus, with YZiP® Light developed as part of YKK’s NATULON® zipper range. The zipper tape incorporates recycled materials, with approximately 25 percent of the product made from recycled content by weight, contributing to reduced environmental impact.
