Advanced Recycling Conference 2024 – Driving Innovationin Sustainable Materials Management

Published: November 6, 2024
Author: Fashion Value Chain

The largest advanced recycling conference in Europe examines cutting-edge technology and game-changing tactics that are altering sustainability.

November 2024, Hürth: In addition to traditional plastic packaging, this year’s Advanced Recycling Conference (ARC) 2024 will include urgent topics such textile recycling, PVC recycling, e-waste valorisation, and advanced recycling methods for engineering thermoplastics. Innovative funding approaches that are crucial for these developments will also be highlighted during the conference.

ARC, which will take place online and in Cologne, Germany on November 20–21, 2024, will bring together policymakers, scholars, and business leaders to discuss innovative approaches and technology that have the potential to transform sustainability.

The biggest advanced recycling conference in Europe

ARC has established itself as the largest conference in Europe for advanced recycling, with approximately 300 guests from 26 countries in 2023, a 30% increase from the previous year. This year’s program, which features the biggest roster to date with 46 speakers, highlights this position. Innovative technologies like dissolving, depolymerization, pyrolysis, and gasification with Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) will be introduced in dedicated sessions. Policy matters including the EU’s recycling goals of up to 70% for packaging and 55% for plastics will also be covered.

In addition to providing industry leaders, brands, investors, and legislators with a vital platform for navigating the changing regulatory environment and investigating new recycling opportunities, ARC 2024 promises priceless insights into new trends and collaborative opportunities in both physical and chemical recycling.

Navigating the next wave of recycling challenges

The conference will include a number of engaging seminars facilitated by professionals in the field that cover every facet of the complex field of advanced recycling, including:

Views on Advanced Plastics Recycling, Markets, Funding, and Investments

The sector and kind of polymer determine the recycling requirements. This perspective will be used to discuss issues including recycling capacities and technologies, their complementing applications, engineering and commodity thermoplastic solutions, and e-waste plastics. Additional subjects include funding and investor perspectives, as well as price dynamics and market evolution in the plastics recycling sector.

Dissolution Technologies for PS, Engineering, and Commodity Plastic Recycling

Targeted polymers from mixed plastic wastes are dissolved by this solvent-based technique while maintaining the polymer’s chemical structure. It is possible to separate the dissolved target polymer from other undissolved plastic components, such as additives, colors, fillers, and non-targeted polymers. Using dissolution technologies, the session discusses physical recycling for polymer extraction or purification from PS and technical plastics (such ABS).

From Polymer to Building Units and Back to Polymer – An Excursion Through Different
Depolymerisation Technologies

Depolymerization, which is aided by heat, radiation, catalysts, or the inclusion of chemicals and enzymes, breaks down plastic debris and even textiles into their constituent building blocks (such as monomers) that can be used again to produce polymers. Enzymatic recycling, solvolysis, and thermal depolymerization are discussed in the session.

Thermochemical Recycling

Pyrolysis is a flexible process that can be used to create a variety of goods for the chemical and plastics industries in addition to assisting with mechanical recycling. Different products with varying quality can be obtained to realize either closed or open recycling loops, depending on the reactor and reaction architecture.

Depolymerisation Technologies for PET

Depolymerization, which is aided by liquid or solid chemicals and enzymes, breaks down PET waste and even textiles into their constituent monomers, which can subsequently be used to produce new polymers. There will be a deeper look at solvolysis, enzymolysis, and solid-state hydrolysis.

Pre-/Post Treatment and Upgrading

All of the cutting-edge recycling technologies are connected by these technologies, or enablers. The technologies presented here increase yields and improve product quality while elevating recycling to a new level.

Insights into Policy, Sustainability, Mass-balance and Alternative Naphtha

In addition to deeper insights into Chemical Recycling for the Production of Alternative Naphtha and the current state of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Recycling, the most recent updates about EU policies on Chemical Recycling and Mass Balance and Attribution will be discussed.
