YKK Corporation has developed a concept version of its premium EXCELLA® zipper featuring zipper tape made from nonwoven fabric partially created from recycled clothing and textile waste. The innovation was introduced through a collaborative project with fashion designer Yuima Nakazato and Seiko Epson Corporation, combining advanced material technology with sustainable fashion.

The concept zipper was showcased as part of the YUIMA NAKAZATO Couture Collection “INFERNO,” which debuted during Paris Haute Couture Week on 8 July 2026.

The project marks the first time regenerated nonwoven fabric sheets produced using Epson’s proprietary Dry Fiber Technology (DFT) have been utilised as zipper tape. Since traditional manufacturing techniques were not suitable for the material, the development team carried out extensive research to ensure reliable attachment of the zipper elements. Additional refinements included selecting a slider compatible with the rigidity of the recycled nonwoven tape and improving overall zipper performance and usability.

The initiative addresses the growing global challenge of textile waste generated through large-scale apparel production and consumption. Designer Yuima Nakazato has been actively exploring solutions for repurposing discarded garments, including textiles collected in countries such as Kenya, while promoting circular fashion practices.

YKK has also been advancing its own sustainability initiatives through products such as the NATULON® Fiber Sourced™ zipper, which incorporates recycled polyester derived from textile waste and discarded garments. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment among the partners to accelerate textile circularity by transforming used clothing into high-value materials for new fashion applications.

According to YKK, insights gained from the project will support the continued development of premium EXCELLA® zippers while expanding sustainable material options for the luxury fashion industry.
