On Tuesday, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) jointly unveiled a groundbreaking new project to use remote satellite monitoring for organic cotton certification.

They are “strengthening the integrity of organic cotton cultivation while reducing fraud in organic cotton supply chains” by employing artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite photography to distinguish between organic and non-organic cotton fields.

Marple, a German software start-up with a focus on “creating state-of-the-art machine learning and data fusion algorithms for earth observations,” is also collaborating.
