Weaving a Sustainable Future: India’s Textile Industry’s Path to Responsible Production

By Suketu Shah, CEO, Vishal Fabrics Limited

Sustainability is no longer optional; it has become a core responsibility. India’s textile industry contributes around 13% to industrial production and consumes significant energy. On Sustainability Day, it is important to reflect on how the sector is transforming. Manufacturers are now embracing eco-friendly innovations, reducing water and waste, and adopting renewable energy to grow responsibly while protecting the environment.

Eco-Friendly Innovation Drives Change

Textile manufacturers are increasingly adopting energy-efficient machinery, green chemistry, and sustainable fibres. These innovations reduce environmental impact without compromising quality. In addition, renewable energy use is rising steadily. Solar, wind, and biomass solutions now power large portions of production units. As a result, dependency on conventional electricity is decreasing, and carbon emissions are dropping.

Water and Waste Management Improvements

Water, a vital resource in textile production, is now treated with greater care. Advanced recycling systems allow mills to reuse significant volumes. Effluent treatment reduces harmful discharges. Some units report water savings of up to 40%, demonstrating tangible environmental benefits. Waste management is also improving. Circular production practices, such as repurposing fiber offcuts and recycling yarns, reduce landfill contributions and extend the lifecycle of textiles.

Aligning with National and Global Goals

These initiatives align with India’s goal to achieve ‘Net Zero’ emissions by 2070. Cleaner technologies and responsible production methods help the industry contribute meaningfully to national climate targets. Globally, sustainable textiles are projected to surpass USD 90 billion by 2030. This reflects growing consumer and brand preference for eco-friendly products. Indian manufacturers are stepping up to meet this demand. By aligning with international standards, they enhance export competitiveness and drive innovation across the value chain.

Tangible Progress and Industry Milestones

Many textile units report measurable reductions in carbon footprints. Renewable energy adoption is increasing, and water consumption is optimized. These milestones show that sustainability is no longer abstract; it is practical and achievable. It delivers value to both industry and society.

Collaboration for True Sustainability

The journey, however, is far from complete. True sustainability requires collaboration across the entire supply chain—from fibre producers to manufacturers, brands, and retailers. Knowledge sharing, investments in cleaner technologies, and continued commitment to responsible practices are essential. Scaling these initiatives ensures environmental and economic benefits.

A Message for Sustainability Day

The threads we weave today shape a sustainable future. By adopting renewable energy, water recycling, waste reduction, and eco-friendly innovation, India’s textile industry demonstrates that growth and responsibility can go hand in hand. While the path to carbon neutrality is challenging, each step toward sustainability highlights how tradition, technology, and environmental care can build a future that benefits both people and the planet.
