The UK government issued a call for evidence on new methods for transporting carbon dioxide, alongside existing pipelines, to help industries move towards net zero emissions. Carbon capture technology captures CO2 before it is emitted, storing it underground and reducing overall emissions. The UK Climate Change Committee views this technology as vital for achieving net zero goals.

Businesses in the UK are eager to reduce carbon emissions and are seeking innovative solutions to achieve this goal. The government is considering ways to give industries greater access to technology that can help in this effort. With the capacity to store up to 20-30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually by 2030, the UK aims to remove millions of cars from the roads each year and create thousands of jobs.

The UK government is investing up to £20 billion in the carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS) industry, marking one of the largest investments in Europe. This initiative follows a commitment outlined in a previous CCUS vision document, aiming to create a competitive market for CCUS in the UK by 2035. Projects utilizing non-pipeline transport methods may be eligible for selection as early as 2025.
