India–EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations are set to gain momentum as Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visits Brussels from 8–9 January 2026. The visit reflects stronger diplomatic engagement between India and the European Union. Both sides aim to accelerate progress on the long-pending trade deal.
FTA Talks at a Pivotal Stage
The discussions come at a crucial moment for India–EU economic ties. Both sides re-launched negotiations in June 2022 after a gap of over nine years. Since then, negotiators have completed 14 formal rounds. Several ministerial-level dialogues have also taken place, including the most recent interaction in December 2025.
EU Remains India’s Key Trade Partner
The European Union continues to be India’s largest trading partner and a major source of investment. Bilateral goods trade recorded strong growth during the 2024–25 fiscal year. Policymakers view the proposed FTA as a strategic partnership rather than a conventional trade pact. The agreement aims to address modern economic and supply chain challenges.
High-Level Engagements in Brussels
During the visit, Goyal will meet Maroš Šefčovič, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security. These talks will guide negotiating teams and help resolve pending issues. The leaders will also work to fast-track a balanced and ambitious agreement.
Focus on Resolving Outstanding Issues
Both sides will review key chapters of the proposed FTA to narrow differences. This ministerial engagement follows a week of intensive technical discussions in Brussels. Earlier, on 6–7 January 2026, India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal met Sabine Weyand, Director-General for Trade at the European Commission, to prepare the ground.
India Pushes for Market Access
India’s negotiation strategy prioritises tangible benefits for citizens. Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, India seeks zero-duty access for labour-intensive sectors. These include textiles, apparel, leather, gems and jewellery, and handicrafts.
Strong Political Commitment on Both Sides
India and the EU have reiterated strong political resolve to conclude the agreement. The upcoming talks will reinforce support for a rules-based trading system. Policymakers also aim to protect farmers and MSMEs while strengthening India’s role in global value chains.
