On Saturday, March 29th, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government orchestrated the final judging for the Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo 2025 (NFDT) and the Sustainable Fashion Design Award 2025 (SFDA), transforming the event into a dynamic showcase of burgeoning talent and forward-thinking design philosophies.
The NFDT competition serves as a launchpad for promising young designers either based in or studying within Tokyo, aiming to cultivate their potential and propel them towards international acclaim. Simultaneously, the SFDA initiative spotlights groundbreaking fashion concepts that ingeniously reinterpret Japan’s rich textile heritage, notably repurposing traditional kimono fabrics for a worldwide audience.
The discerning eyes evaluating the collections comprised a who’s who of the fashion world. The NFDT jury included the visionary Kunihiko Morinaga of ANREALAGE, a fixture on the Paris Fashion Week calendar, and Yusuke Takahashi, the creative force behind CFCL, alongside six other influential figures. The SFDA panel boasted the expertise of Norbert Leuret, President of LVMH Japan, and Hideaki Shikama, the designer behind “Children of the Discordance” and a Milan Fashion Week regular, complemented by six other esteemed authorities.
Across both competitions, sixteen standout creations garnered the highest accolades in diverse categories.
