The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Mumbai successfully hosted its annual cultural festival, Spectrum’26, on 13th and 14th March 2026. The two-day celebration witnessed vibrant participation from students across NIFT and other leading institutions, transforming the campus into a lively space of creativity and cultural expression.
The theme for this year’s festival, “DESIDERIUM” (Latin for Nostalgia), explored the idea of Indian nostalgia as a living emotion reflected in everyday objects, traditions, and memories. From jhumkas and childhood candies to Holi pichkaaris and kites soaring in the sky, the theme celebrated how simple moments carry deep emotional connections. Rather than merely revisiting the past, DESIDERIUM highlighted how nostalgia continues to influence the present and inspire future creativity.
The festival was inaugurated in the presence of distinguished guests Ms. Aishwarya Suresh, Global Head of Brand at The Knowledge Society (TKS), and Mr. Anud Singh Dhaka, who joined as the special guest, adding inspiration and energy to the opening ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dr. Ajit Kumar Khare, Director of NIFT Mumbai, delivered an inspiring message and officially declared the commencement of Spectrum’26 DESIDERIUM, encouraging students to celebrate creativity, individuality, and collaboration.
Over the two days, the festival featured an exciting lineup of competitions and activities spanning sports, performing arts, literary expression, fashion, and creative design. Sporting events such as Futsal, Basketball, Volleyball, Chess, and Table Tennis encouraged teamwork and healthy competition among participants.
The cultural segment formed the heart of the festival, with events including Colour Walk, Reframe, Creative Writing, Debate, Solo Dance, Solo Singing, Group Dance, Bayaan-e-Mehfil, Stand-up Comedy, Short Film, Movie Poster Making, Film Trivia, Behind the Veil of Logic, Makeup & Hair Competition, Saree Draping & Styling, RunwayVerse, Texture Hunt, and Mr. & Ms. Spectrum. These platforms allowed students to showcase their talents through storytelling, performance, styling, and visual creativity.
Students also presented Sustainable Installations, demonstrating innovative concepts that emphasized sustainability, responsible design practices, and environmental awareness, reflecting the institute’s commitment to design thinking and future-focused creativity.
Adding to the festive spirit, the Meena Bazaar and student-run stalls displayed handmade products, accessories, artworks, and creative merchandise designed by students. These stalls offered young designers and entrepreneurs an opportunity to present and sell their creations while engaging with visitors and fellow participants.
One of the most anticipated highlights of Spectrum’26 “Desiderium” was the Fashion Show, where students from various departments, including Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design, Knitwear Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Technology, Space Design, and Fashion Management, creatively interpreted the theme. Each department presented a distinctive narrative inspired by memories, traditions, and cultural symbols, ranging from rituals, childhood streets, and local melas to Panchatantra stories and personal memories such as a mother’s vanity. Through innovative garments, accessories, and visual storytelling, the showcase beautifully blended heritage with contemporary design perspectives. The fashion show was judged by esteemed personalities, Jigar Shah, Founder & Creative Director at Jigar & Nikita, Rohit Singh Rajput, Head Wedding Couture Stylist with Kalki Fashion, and Paulmi Dhawan, co-founder and designer of Paulmi & Harsh.
The evenings of the festival were filled with excitement and high energy. The Battle of Bands delivered electrifying musical performances, followed by a special artist performance that captivated the audience. The celebration concluded with a vibrant DJ Night, bringing students together for a spirited finale.
The closing ceremony featured the distribution of prizes and certificates to winners across various competitions, followed by the announcement of the Fashion Show results, marking the successful culmination of Spectrum’26 “Desiderium”.
With enthusiastic participation, remarkable creativity, and a vibrant cultural atmosphere across the campus, Spectrum’26 “Desiderium” once again highlighted NIFT Mumbai’s commitment to nurturing creativity, collaboration, and holistic student engagement through dynamic cultural platforms.
