In a dramatic shift from previous elections, political merchandise manufacturers in Tamil Nadu are facing a significant decrease in orders as candidates show reluctance to invest in promotional material. Traditionally, parties like DMK, AIADMK, and other Tamil Nadu political groups would flock to manufacturers to place orders for merchandise bearing their slogans. However, this year, only the BJP has placed orders, with quantities significantly lower than in the past.
Manufacturers in Tiruppur, a hub for political merchandise, attribute this decline to various factors including the shortened campaign period, stringent election regulations, and increased competition from garment units in Ludhiana and Mumbai. The ruling party functionaries, who typically drive orders, also seem hesitant to splurge amidst a perceived lack of competition.
Industry experts and officials like MP Muthurathinam express concerns over the economic implications of this trend, citing the impact on local businesses and the fading interest in party-branded apparel among the public.
