Schiaparelli’s “Icarus”: A Renaissance Reimagined for the Modern Collector

Schiaparelli’s latest couture collection, “Icarus,” isn’t merely clothing; it’s a curated experience, a testament to the brand’s legacy of otherworldly opulence. Creative director Daniel Roseberry presented a symphony of textures and hues, drawing inspiration from the Renaissance and colonial eras, yet firmly rooted in modern sensibilities.

The collection’s defining feature is the celebration of the female form. Cinched waists, a recurring motif, blossomed into dramatic, often whimsical hems, with mermaid silhouettes taking centre stage. Roseberry’s artistic exploration of anatomy was evident, with sculpted hips adding a touch of provocative allure. Kendall Jenner’s satin and mesh gown, with its strategically boned bodice and layered hem, exemplified this aesthetic.

“Icarus” is a maximalist dream, where no detail is spared. Bejewelled nets, ostrich feathers, pearl embroidery, ruffles, and layers upon layers of stretched satin converge in a harmonious explosion of textures. Nudes and pastels provide a soft counterpoint to the collection’s inherent drama.

Despite the intricate embellishments, the collection maintains a sense of fluidity. Each piece possesses its own unique rhythm, creating a captivating visual dance. This sense of movement, combined with the collection’s historical influences, evokes a sense of escapism, a “suspended reality” as described by Roseberry. “Icarus” is more than just haute couture; it’s wearable art, designed for the collector who appreciates the power of sartorial storytelling.
