New data has revealed a surge in UK exports to the United States, with fashion being one of the popular categories. According to the figures, UK exports to America reached £168.3 billion in the four quarters leading up to the end of 2022. This marked a significant year-on-year increase of 19%, equivalent to £26.9 billion at current prices. In comparison, the value of goods and services purchased by Britons from the US amounted to £110.8 billion during the same period.

The United States emerged as the UK’s largest single trading partner, accounting for 16.3% of the total UK trade. ParcelHero, a delivery specialist, conducted an analysis of official data along with its own findings. The research revealed that while heavy machinery, vehicles, pharmaceuticals, optical and medical equipment, and electronics were leading exports from the UK to the US, smaller British manufacturers and exporters were experiencing a sales boom.

Among these smaller businesses, fashion items emerged as the hottest-selling products. ParcelHero’s Head of Consumer Research, David Jinks, commented on this trend, suggesting that it may be attributed to factors such as the “Coronation effect” or the competitive pricing of UK products due to the depreciation of the pound against the dollar. Jinks further highlighted the success of UK sellers in the women’s clothing category, which witnessed significant sales to the US. Last year alone, British fashion and clothing exports to the US amounted to approximately $338 million.

The increasing demand for British-made goods reflects a renewed love for these products among US buyers. The appeal could stem from the unique and high-quality designs offered by British fashion brands, as well as the craftsmanship associated with manufacturing in the UK. Moreover, the lower prices resulting from currency fluctuations may have contributed to the attractiveness of UK fashion products in the American market.

As the UK’s fashion industry gains momentum in the US, it presents significant opportunities for British fashion businesses, especially smaller manufacturers and exporters. The surge in sales to the US showcases the global appeal of British fashion, with its ability to cater to diverse tastes and provide a distinctive style. These positive developments underline the potential for growth and expansion in the UK fashion industry, as it continues to capture the attention and admiration of consumers worldwide.
