Revolve, the Californian fashion brand, has introduced a groundbreaking concept by launching three collections entirely generated by artificial intelligence (AI). These collections made their debut at the inaugural AI Fashion Week (AIFW) hosted by Maison Meta in New York and have now transitioned into physical products available for purchase on Revolve’s e-commerce platform.
What makes these collections unique is that they were not crafted by conventional fashion designers. Instead, architects José Sobral, Matilde Mariano, and fashion stylist Opé Majek took the creative helm, each contributing their unique touch to 10 to 12 distinct pieces, accommodating sizes from XS to L.
Mitch Moseley, Revolve’s CEO of owned brands, spearheaded the design and production efforts for these AI-generated collections, although the exact details of the profit-sharing agreement between the architects-turned-designers and Revolve are undisclosed.
To make these AI-generated designs a reality, the designers were given access to Revolve’s extensive supply chain and a dedicated project manager, enabling them to collaborate with the brand’s atelier team, product developers, pattern-makers, and technicians. Together, they fine-tuned the designs and selected suitable materials for in-house production.
This endeavor also shed light on the limitations of AI in fashion. Some designs had to be modified to make them feasible for physical production, emphasizing factors like functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal. For instance, José Sobral leveraged his construction background to ensure technical feasibility.
This release coincides with ‘Season 2’ of AIFW, scheduled in Milan, promising more winners, clearer guidelines, and expansion to multiple locations. For Revolve, this project served as a valuable learning experience, demonstrating the potential for AI to accelerate production processes while highlighting the importance of human expertise in fashion design and production.
