Interest in raw, uncut diamonds is gaining strong momentum globally, with consumers increasingly seeking authenticity and individuality in their jewellery choices. Danish jewellery brand Roughdiamonds.dk has reported a significant rise in demand, with revenue from customers in the United Kingdom and the United States more than tripling over the past four years.
Growing Preference for Natural, Uncut Diamonds
In a jewellery market traditionally driven by polished perfection and the rise of synthetic diamonds, Roughdiamonds.dk is witnessing a shift towards natural, raw stones. Since 2022, the brand has experienced substantial growth in international markets, particularly in the UK and USA.
According to founder Maya Bjørnsten, this surge reflects a broader consumer movement towards meaningful, distinctive purchases. Research from global consulting firm McKinsey indicates that during periods of uncertainty, consumers tend to prioritise products that offer authenticity and long-term value over mass-produced alternatives. At the same time, raw diamonds, formed over one to three billion years, are becoming increasingly scarce.
– At a time when the world feels uncertain and unstable, we are seeing more demand for our jewelry. It’s about people searching for something real and unique – something they can connect a story to. Raw diamonds are not perfect, and that’s what makes them personal and alive. This is exactly what we’re experiencing, especially among our British and American customers, says Maya Bjørnsten.
With 18 years of expertise, she is the only specialist in the world devoted to crafting jewellery from uncut diamonds while preserving their natural form.
Synthetic Diamonds Driving Natural Demand
The increasing presence of synthetic diamonds in the market has further accelerated interest in natural stones. Maya Bjørnsten personally sources diamonds from Antwerp, a global hub where over 80 percent of the world’s rough diamonds are traded.
– The more synthetic diamonds enter the market, the more desirable the natural ones become. Many customers want something created by nature – something truly one of a kind. Stones that carry meaning when worn. This has clearly driven more customers toward natural stones with a distinct story, says Maya Bjørnsten.
Emotional Value and Personal Connection
Currently, approximately 75 percent of Roughdiamonds.dk’s customers are located outside Denmark, united by a shared preference for jewellery that reflects personal stories rather than conventional aesthetics.
One such example is customer Rikke Struve, whose jewellery holds deep emotional significance.
– The diamond carries the color of hope and gives me strength. I wear it every single day as a reminder that when life hurts, there is always hope. Today, Rasmus lives in a new, loving version of himself. Each of my diamond pieces is a valuable investment, but above all an investment in memories, says Rikke Struve.
Craftsmanship Rooted in Imperfection
The defining characteristic of raw diamonds lies in their individuality—each stone varies in shape, colour, and texture, creating a unique aesthetic and emotional value.
– Working with imperfect, raw diamonds requires care, patience, skill, and passion. It’s a delicate process where we allow each diamond’s true character to emerge. No two diamonds are alike – and the same goes for our jewelry. That’s exactly how we want it to be, says Maya Bjørnsten.
Responsible Sourcing and Product Offering
Roughdiamonds.dk offers both bespoke, custom-designed pieces and ready-to-wear collections.
