In collaboration with French eyewear manufacturer Oceneo, Quiksilver will release 150 limited-edition pairs of sunglasses on June 28 that are constructed from recycled surfing wetsuits. The board sports company started the Take Back initiative in October 2022 with the intention of supporting research efforts to create a system for collecting and recycling unwanted goods. Because of this, Quiksilver has started to gather broken wetsuits from six locations around the French Basque and Landes coasts.
The initial findings of Quiksilver’s recycling study have been released, and the firm has also revealed its collaboration with Oceneo, a French company situated in the Arcachon basin that specializes in repurposing surfing wetsuits that have outlived their useful lives. These neoprene wetsuits may be turned into sunglasses and other accessories by Oceneo. Through this process of metamorphosis, Quiksilver and Oceneo have reimagined the Ferris, the flagship model of Quiksilver sunglasses, which is now known as FerrisNeo.
Neoprene and pine resin are combined to make enough frames for four pairs of wetsuits from a single wetsuit. The bio-nylon lenses from Dalloz Créations in the Jura area, the recycled neoprene glasses case from Tearing Waves in Soustons, and the packaging from Donibanekopi in Saint-Jean-de-Luz are the other components that are all created in France.
