Qatar’s August 2023 Import of Knotted Carpets Plunges to $102K

Qatar Knotted Carpet Imports

In August 2023, supplies from abroad of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings increased by 4.7% to 4.3K square meters, rising for the second consecutive month after two months of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when imports increased by 859% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 17K square meters. From May 2023 to August 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knotted carpet imports declined remarkably to $102K (IndexBox estimates) in August 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 when imports increased by 3,496% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 1M square meters in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to August 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In August 2023, China (3.6K square meters) constituted the largest supplier of knotted carpet to Qatar, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, knotted carpet imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (231 square meters), more than tenfold.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China amounted to +10.6%.

In value terms, the largest knotted carpet suppliers to Qatar were China ($42K) and Pakistan ($40K).

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +8.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review.

Imports by Type

In August 2023, carpets and other textile floor coverings; knotted, of wool or fine animal hair, whether or not made up (3.3K square meters) constituted the largest type of knotted carpet supplied to Qatar, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, carpets and other textile floor coverings; knotted, of wool or fine animal hair, whether or not made up exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, carpets and other textile floor coverings; knotted, of textile materials (other than wool or fine animal hair), whether or not made up (950 square meters), fourfold.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of carpets and other textile floor coverings; knotted, of wool or fine animal hair, whether or not made up totaled -2.9%.

In value terms, carpets and other textile floor coverings; knotted, of wool or fine animal hair, whether or not made up ($62K) and carpets and other textile floor coverings; knotted, of textile materials (other than wool or fine animal hair), whether or not made up ($40K) constituted the most imported types of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings in Qatar.

Import Prices by Country

In August 2023, the knotted carpet price amounted to $23.7 per square meter (CIF, Qatar), shrinking by -63.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 275% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $166 per square meter in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($175 per square meter), while the price for China ($11.4 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
