Pearl Academy Students to Reimagine Jute and Khadi at Lakmé Fashion Week 2025
Students from Pearl Academy, India’s leading creative education institution, will showcase their collections at Lakmé Fashion Week 2025, in partnership with FDCI, on 12th October at 12 PM at The Grand, Vasant Kunj. Over the years, Pearl Academy has established itself as a key voice on the country’s premier fashion platform, consistently introducing cutting-edge fashion innovations and disruptive ideas to the runway.
Reimagining Traditional Indian Textiles
This season, Pearl students focus on jute and khadi, two iconic Indian fabrics, and reimagine their potential. Historically, jute was celebrated as the “golden thread of Bengal” but mainly used for utilitarian purposes. Khadi, with its fragile yarn and traditional 5.5-feet saree format, has always been symbolic yet technically demanding.
Through experimental processes, students soften, reshape, and reinterpret these fabrics for contemporary fashion. Collaborating with designer Jeetinder Sandhu, khadi will take unexpected forms, demonstrating that even traditional textiles can remain relevant today. By highlighting jute and khadi, the showcase emphasizes conscious consumption, sustainability, and a renewed dialogue with heritage materials.
Three Acts of Transformation: Revisit, Reform, Reinvent
The presentation unfolds in three acts:
-
Revisit – Looks at the past through a modern lens, reinterpreting traditional crafts and techniques for contemporary audiences.
-
Reform – Uses khadi’s history as a symbol of protest to address today’s urgencies, including climate change and social justice. Fashion becomes a medium of silent resistance and collective conscience.
-
Reinvent – Brings renewal by giving jute and khadi new life through fresh silhouettes, refined textures, and experimental design.
This trilogy shows how heritage materials can evolve from historical relics into catalysts for dialogue, creativity, and change.
