The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC), and the Design and Technical Craft Council (DATCC) will present Padma Doree, a pioneering textile, at a special showcase scheduled from 1st to 3rd May.
Positioned as a significant step under the Make in India vision, Padma Doree represents a refined blend of India’s textile heritage and contemporary innovation. Developed across two culturally rich regions, the fabric brings together diverse craft traditions and generational knowledge systems into a modern textile expression.
The textile is rooted in responsible creation, using natural dyes derived from traditional dyeing practices that ensure depth of colour while maintaining environmental integrity. An integrated isothermal process enhances durability, comfort, and adaptability, merging scientific advancement with heritage techniques.
In line with its ethical framework, Padma Doree incorporates a non-violent silk approach, ensuring that silkworms are not harmed during production. This aligns with a broader commitment to sustainability and humane design practices.
Beyond material innovation, the initiative supports cultural continuity and artisan livelihoods through active collaboration with craft communities. It plays a vital role in preserving traditional skills while enabling economic empowerment.
The upcoming showcase will highlight the journey of Padma Doree from raw material to finished textile, demonstrate the integration of natural dyeing and isothermal technology, and present the convergence of regional textile cultures through a contemporary design lens. It will also explore the role of design in balancing preservation with innovation in the Indian textile sector.
Reflecting on the unveiling, the team behind Padma Doree shares, “Padma Doree is conceived as a tribute, to the hands that create, the cultures that sustain, and the future we collectively shape. It is an endeavour grounded in respect, intention, and quiet innovation.”
The showcase will bring together members of the design community, media, and cultural stakeholders, offering a closer look at a textile that combines heritage, sustainability, and modern craftsmanship.
