They may no longer be considered working royals, even if Meghan Markle and Prince Harry relocated to Los Angeles in 2020 (a move that was mainly unnoticed) and are now building their company or American Riviera Orchard. But their two-day tour to Nigeria appears to have all the characteristics of a formal state visit. One neighboring academy has heard conference rooms singing “God Save the King,”

At one point, the Duke and Duchess appeared to be imitating the colors of the Nigerian flag by posing in matching teal-green and white suits. These former senior royals seem to still be adhering to the etiquette that the late Queen taught them upon their initial transfer to Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand. Also seen is an Altuzarra pantsuit that Meghan first wore in 2018 when expecting Archie on an official visit to Sydney, as well as the muted colors of her Heidi Merrick dress, which reminded her of her time at Kensington Palace even though the backless cut made her look a little more California girl.

Yesterday afternoon, when Mothering Sunday was commemorated in hundreds of countries, including the US, Meghan wore the silk Carolina Herrera column dress she decided to wear when she told Princess Lilibet she was pregnant in 2021. Some of her most notable fashion statements to date include that outfit, the Parosh dress she wore to announce her engagement, and the Claire Waight Keller gown she wore to her wedding. Imagine her lounging about in the barefoot gardens of her Montecito estate, radiating the effortless carefreeness of a woman carrying the future of her nation.
