Indian performance artist and self-authenticity facilitator Namrata Vishal Lodaya made a striking statement at the Cannes Film Festival 2026 with a conceptual live art performance that challenged conventional ideas of glamour, identity, and validation.
Representing India through her association with Haute Monde MIWW, the Mumbai-based artist unveiled The Inner Red Carpet, an immersive installation designed to encourage introspection and emotional awareness in a space typically associated with fame and spectacle.
A performance centred on reflection and authenticity
Rather than approaching Cannes as a celebrity appearance, Namrata used the platform to ask a deeply personal question: “Have you really walked on your Inner Red Carpet?”
Her conceptual ensemble featured one visible eye while the other was replaced with a mirror, symbolising self-reflection, truth, and emotional awakening. The outfit was conceptualised in collaboration with designer Rashi Shah and executed by designers Riddhi Nagda and Jiya Jamadar, with support from Nooralamji. Hair and makeup for the performance were styled by Shivani Arora.
Walking silently through Cannes with deliberate stillness, Namrata transformed her presence into a living artistic statement focused on vulnerability, emotional connection, and inner identity.
AI-generated visuals spark wider conversations
While the performance gained significant online attention, several moments from Namrata’s actual red carpet appearance were reportedly not captured as expected. This led to AI-generated visuals inspired by her look circulating widely online.
Addressing the situation, Namrata emphasised that the experience reinforced the very message behind her performance — prioritising authenticity over external validation and lived experience over curated perfection.
Speaking about the journey, she shared that although the absence of captured moments initially felt emotional, the experience ultimately deepened her understanding of presence and purpose.
She further clarified that while the viral visuals were AI-generated interpretations, the emotions, artistic intention, and personal experiences behind them remained entirely real.
Art as emotional healing and transformation
Known for using eraser dust as an artistic medium, Namrata incorporated the material into her Cannes ensemble to symbolise transformation, healing, and the release of emotional burdens tied to the past.
With more than 26 years dedicated to mentoring individuals through intentional art and self-authenticity practices, her work focuses on helping people reconnect with themselves beyond societal expectations.
The performance concluded with Namrata physically cutting away part of her outfit after exiting the premiere, symbolising the release of pride, emotional baggage, and identity shaped by external pressures.
Her Cannes appearance also served as a tribute to her late husband, Vishal Lodaya, while furthering her larger mission of reaching and emotionally impacting millions through art and human connection.
A new narrative for India at Cannes
Created within just 14 days, The Inner Red Carpet brought together artists, designers, and collaborators united by a shared vision of transforming one of the world’s most glamorous platforms into a deeply human and emotional dialogue.
Far beyond fashion, the performance positioned India at Cannes through the lens of vulnerability, healing, introspection, and authentic artistic expression.
