The innovative mycelium material is now featuring improved luxury-grade performance, setting a new benchmark in bio-material innovation.

As the first Fine MyceliumTM material to enter the luxury materials market, MycoWorks, a pioneer in the biomaterials industry, today released the most recent performance statistics for their premium flagship mycelium material, ReishiTM. With the introduction of MycoWorks’ first-ever e-commerce website, HERE, customers can now buy the company’s high-performance mycelium-made products directly for the first time.

MycoWorks’ Rei-Tanning™ Technology

Through a collaborative effort between MycoWorks’ San Francisco-based Innovation Center and MycoWorks’ Spain tannery experts in Igualada, a region well known for its traditional leather tanning expertise, the company has rolled out Rei-Tanning™ technology. The exclusive formula enhances the performance consistency of Reishi™ sheets, enabling the production of luxury goods with intricate construction techniques, including “stitch-and-turn” and edge applications.

During this unique nourishing process, Reishi™ sheets are treated to achieve desired properties such as fullness and softness, durability, and resistance to water and other elements. The Rei-Tanning™  process is the ultimate combination of innovation and traditional know-how. As Reishi™ is today available at scale, specific retanning guidelines are available under license for use by clients’ facilities. The Rei-Tanning™ process is unlocking new applications within the luxury sector, overcoming challenges that have long made such achievements difficult for biomaterials.

Latest Reishi™ Performance Results

Latest test results show that Reishi™ is performing higher on a range of luxury leather benchmarks, setting a new bar for both the biomaterials industry and leather alternatives. Tested on harvests of Reishi™ grown at the company’s commercial-scale plant in South Carolina (the world’s first ever of its kind), these results validate the innovative biomaterial’s ability to measure up to– and even surpass– key quality indicators, and likewise show MycoWorks’ continued commitment to deliver mycelium materials of the highest caliber to market. Combined, these tests showcase the superior durability, resistance and performance of MycoWorks’ Fine Mycelium™ materials.

Validated through third-party testing*, Reishi™—with Rei-Tanning™ applied—has achieved new standards in five key qualitative evaluation areas, exceeding most indicators:

  • Bally Flex resistance (flexibility, creasing): till 20,000 cycles
  • Martindale Abrasion Resistance: till 25,600 cycles
  • Colorfastness (dye transfer): Reishi has passed the 200 cycles benchmark
  • Ageing Test at 50 C and 90 % rh : Pass
  • Finish Adhesion: Reishi has reached 0.5N/mm

*Tests conducted by CTC Groupe 14/02/2025

**Results achieved with the Reishi Aura finishing, other Reishi finishing results available on demand.

Ligne Roset validates Reishi™’s performance

MycoWorks’ strategic partner, Ligne Roset, has also conducted proprietary tests on Reishi™ in its internal lab, using rigorous standards that exceed typical furniture industry benchmarks. These tests included the successful completion of the Martindale Abrasion Resistance test (up to 50,000 cycles) and a sitting simulation test (replicating a 100 kg human body for over 25,000 cycles).

These overall performances are the result of ten years of research and commitment at MycoWorks to meet their strategic partners’ most demanding criteria and anticipate customers’ needs.

Scalable, high-performing, and now surpassing standards for both innovative and legacy materials, Reishi™, is being used across a diverse range of industries including leather goods, accessories, furniture, and interior design. Supple and durable, Reishi™ lends itself well to the craft and assembly of beautiful, sophisticated objects.
