Each year, approximately 400 individuals receive invitations to the Met Gala, with the guest list curated by editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, and her team. This year, the cost of tickets to the Met Gala is as extravagant as ever, with media reports stating that a ticket to this year’s event costs a staggering Rs 40 lakh ($50,000). For those who wish to book a table, costs start at Rs 2.45 crore ($3,00,000). These high costs attract public attention, despite the amount of donations and charity associated with the event.
Contrary to popular belief, the Met Gala is not just an extravagant party for the elite, rich or glamorous. The event serves a noble purpose; the money it raises, which is typically in the millions, is donated to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
Notably, this department is a self-sufficient division that brings together art, fashion, and
culture by promoting and orchestrating high-end exhibits. The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum usually organizes an annual spring display to welcome visitors to the museum from all over the world. The proceeds from the Met gala are often used to fund these initiatives through substantial donations made by individuals and corporations who sponsor the event.
In 2023, the Met Gala’s theme is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” In remembrance of the renowned fashion designer who passed away, all of the attendees at the event have been requested to dress in his signature look, emphasizing his immense contribution to the fashion industry.
