Sometimes it’s the seemingly innocuous looks that catch the most attention. Kim Kardashian’s latest updo is a bun-ponytail hybrid that exudes effortless cool. From the Fendi runway to the streets of New York, Kardashian’s latest look draws attention to the deep roots of her grown-out peroxide lengths, which is kind of the point.
“A bun can look quite serious—this one is less done,” hairstylist Chris Appleton says of the updo, which he calls the wet-look flip bun. Appleton adds that, while the style appears effortless, positioning is crucial. “Kim’s typical low bun is lower, whereas this one follows the eyeline…it snatches the eye.” The effect is enhanced when combined with a bit of extra texture, which Appleton achieves with a finger-rake rather than the usual super-slicked finish.
The midi knot ushers in a new era for Kardashian, a subtle upgrade to her signature look. It turns out that understated makes a big statement in this case. “It’s funny how many people have stopped me about this,” Appleton says, laughing.
