Maharashtra’s handwoven Khadi fabric is set for a stylish resurgence as the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board (MSKVIB) unveils a series of initiatives to mark its 65th anniversary. The focus is firmly on engaging younger generations and repositioning Khadi as a contemporary fashion choice.

The Board is introducing a “Khadi Mitra Yojana,” a program designed to enlist students and the public as advocates for the fabric. This initiative will see the appointment of “Khadi Mitras,” acting as brand ambassadors to bridge the gap between Khadi and today’s youth, integrating it into mainstream fashion. Collaborations with six colleges are already underway, connecting students with Khadi-related projects.

Further boosting Khadi’s fashion profile, the MSKVIB plans to host fashion shows showcasing the fabric’s versatility. These events will highlight Khadi’s potential in modern apparel design. Research projects exploring innovative uses for Khadi are also being developed.

A “Khadi Yatra” will journey across Maharashtra, promoting the fabric and educating the public about its cultural and historical significance. The Yatra aims to underscore Khadi’s importance as a symbol of Indian heritage and its continued relevance in modern society.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the MSKVIB emphasises Khadi’s unifying qualities, transcending social divisions. The fabric is presented as an emblem of India’s freedom struggle, its rich cultural heritage, the philosophy of non-violence, and the well-being of farmers. The anniversary celebrations aim to not only revitalise Khadi’s presence in the fashion world but also reinforce its deep-rooted cultural and historical significance.
