The term “creative genius” is often held on a pedestal, limited by elitism. Is Kerwin Frost deserving of such a label? That’s up for debate. To me, being a creative genius isn’t about museum endorsements, the value of art, or mastering a specific craft.
A true creative genius retains a connection to their inner child despite life’s pressures. Think about how many adults would jet off to Neverland if they could ditch adult responsibilities. The inner child knows how to dream big, stay enthusiastic, open-minded, and not take life too seriously.
Kerwin Frost embodies this spirit with his playful demeanor, eccentric fashion, kid-friendly aesthetic, and quirky color choices. His recent collaboration with McDonald’s offers a peek into his creative process.
Frost shared, “I’ve always loved art and storytelling, envisioning a community where everyone embraces their true selves.” His colorful style reflects in the Kerwin Frost Box, inspired by his Harlem roots. The McDonald’s collab reimagines McNugget Buddies as characters from his childhood neighborhood, blending nostalgia with childlike delight.
“When McDonald’s approached me, I aimed to represent my artist self and my Harlem upbringing. Collecting McNugget Buddies was a childhood dream, so it naturally merged with the Frost Way world I sketched,” Frost explained. This 2023 collaboration, McDonald’s most significant, features not only McNugget Buddies but also trading cards, vibrant merch, and nostalgic claymation ads.
The Fry Guy Shoes, furry blue clogs inspired by 70s McDonald’s characters, were a hit but quickly sold out. Frost aims to infuse joy and excitement, reminiscent of a Happy Meal’s thrill, into his collaboration. He hopes fans connect with the McNugget Buddies and express their authenticity.
The Kerwin Frost Box is still available at McDonald’s nationwide, offering hats, jackets, and more at kerwinfrost.com while stocks last.
