RULE-BREAKING GLAMOUR
The Jimmy Choo Autumn 2023 collection embraces the quintessential DNA of the brand, while simultaneously turning it on its head. House codes of glamour, embellishment and pearls are present and correct, but this season the preciousness is punctuated with a touch of punk. Staying true to the brand’s multifaceted jewel-like quality, this season explores a different perspective.
“As a British designer, punk is something I am always drawn to – it’s a movement that redefined fashion and helped shape the world’s style today, and it was born on the streets of London. This collection fuses the anarchic energy of punk with the refinement that’s a hallmark of Jimmy Choo – as well as our light-hearted spirit and love of glamour. It’s colourful, vibrant, energetic, and unexpected. It’s also a story about love – because love can be unexpected, and unanticipated, and opposites attract. Love has no boundaries. It’s about the constant love affair I have with beauty and a dose of Brit grit.” Sandra Choi – Creative Director
The collection is a marriage of contrasts, and attractive opposites. Raw meets refined, princess meets punk – for Autumn Jimmy Choo is in rebel mode, upending expectations and contradicting conventions. It’s about an attitude and an outlook – a sense of the unique, of the individual, and of identity that resonates with the youth of any era.
That rule-breaking spirit is reflected in nods to the punk movement. Studs, straps, buckles and anarchic mixes of tartan all echo true punk style, alongside acidic mixes of colour – cranberry, cassis, peacock blue and black – and sharp graphic silhouettes. These are uplifted, elevated, and fused with the superlative craftsmanship, elegance and innate glamour that semaphores Jimmy Choo – a fresh mix that brings polish to punk, and vice versa. The perfect collision of the two worlds.
Jimmy Choo’s fundamentals form the core – there are references to archival styles, as well as elements that are quintessential to the brand. The AGATHE, first immortalised in a 2001 Raymond Meier campaign, has a second coming for 2023, knee-high in glossy biscuit leather or cropped to mid-calf in crocodile-embossed leather. Its crisp silhouette and strict lines belie its rebellious spirit; the chiselled, elongated toe is a silhouette emphasised throughout the collection, in the angular MARYANNE pump and mule, balanced on a sharp, signature 100mm Jimmy Choo kick-heel, and the DIDI, sweetly kitten-heeled but with spiked bite. Punkish tartan is a recurrent leitmotif – on the CELESTIA flat, it is buckled and strapped against the foot with leather, pin pricked with studs and pearls; the classic BON BON is proposed in hardy tartan, harnessed to evoke the collection’s undercurrent of radical chic. Tartan patterns are filtered through a glamourous lens to be realised with intricate beading, decorating the BLAKE boot, MICRO CLOUD clutch and VARENNE QUAD crossbody, a perfect marriage of heritage and glamour.
The CECE boot, a stacked Western heel counterbalancing a toe defined with ‘Diamond’ studs, a key collection detail drawing inspiration from both Jimmy Choo’s heritage and its current state of mind. Autumn sees the birth of a new design signature, the DIAMOND. Manifesting as both a faceted chain that hallmarks bags and shoes, as well as a closure on a new bag family.
