The topic of whether Tom Ford would stay or leave the company after its sale in November was addressed in his most recent collection. Additionally, it made a room for a fresh designer.

According to rumors, Ford’s longstanding menswear designer Peter Hawkings will be hired.

Well, that was rather underwhelming…

About 20 years after shocking the industry by quitting that job and his position at the top of Yves Saint Laurent and declaring he was going to make movies (and then making critically acclaimed hit), he shocked the industry once again by returning to fashion, this time under his own name, 13 years later. Probably for real this time.

He released a surprise “final collection” on Wednesday, consisting of three quick movies shot by photographer Steven Klein. They show a slew of supermodels

(including Amber Valletta, Karlie Kloss, Karen Elson, and Joan Smalls) acting out various emotions while encased in a succession of glass boxes while wearing vintage designs from Ford’s previous 13 years.

Outside, the designer himself strolls past alone, barely discernible in the darkness, wearing his trademark dark suit, white shirt, and dark glasses. He periodically pauses to lift a hand and instruct. No statement was provided with the films, and Ford denied requests for comment.

It was impossible to reach Estée Lauder or Zegna, the company that holds the license for Tom Ford clothing, for comment. However, the line provided an answer to the quandary that had plagued the company since its sale in November: Would Ford stay or go? Additionally, it made room for a fresh designer. According to rumors, Ford’s longstanding menswear designer Peter Hawkings will take the position.
