A delegation comprising 18 members from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Jewellers Association Jaipur, and Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association visited Thailand from 22nd to 24th February 2025 to enhance bilateral trade and cooperation in the gem and jewellery sector.
A major highlight of this visit was the signing of three pivotal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the opening of the Bangkok Gem and Jewelry Fair (BGJF) 2025 on 22nd February. These agreements, witnessed by key Thai industry leaders, mark a new era of collaboration between the two nations in gem standardization, research, and market expansion.
MoUs signed include:
- GJEPC’s Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery Research and Laboratories Centre (IIGJ-RLC) & GIT Thailand – to align gemstone standardization, enhance research, and foster knowledge exchange.
- Jewellers Association Jaipur & Chanthaburi Gem and Jewellery Traders Association – to boost coloured gemstone trade through joint participation in global events and market expansion.
- Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association (SGJIA) & Thai Silver Exporters Association (TSEA) – to drive innovation and global market access in silver jewellery trade.
Dr. Nawal Agarwal, Chairman of IIGJ Jaipur, emphasized that the IIGJ-RLC-GIT MoU will strengthen trust and transparency in the global gemstone sector. He also invited Thai associations to participate in the upcoming International Gem & Jewellery Show (Saudijex) in Jeddah this September to deepen trade relations further.
Industry Leaders’ Statements:
- Mr. Alok Sonkhia, President, Jewellers Association Jaipur, highlighted that the agreement with Chanthaburi Gem & Jewelry Traders Association will open new trade avenues for coloured gemstones and support industry growth.
- Mr. Arvind Gupta, President, Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association, stated that the partnership with Thai Silver Exporters Association will drive innovation and design excellence in silver jewellery.
The delegation held key discussions with leading Thai institutions such as the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) and the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association (TGJTA). The focus was on enhancing lab certification processes, skilling initiatives, and trade facilitation. Additionally, plans were discussed for mutual participation in India’s premier gem and jewellery events like IIJS Mumbai, JAS, and JAGS Jaipur.
This strategic collaboration follows a Thai delegation’s visit to Jaipur in November 2024 and is set to redefine the India-Thailand gem and jewellery trade landscape, paving the way for enhanced market access, joint ventures, and technological advancements in the industry.
