Business leaders and Malaysian representatives discuss opportunities across semiconductors, fintech, hospitality, tourism, agriculture and infrastructure.

India and Malaysia are exploring opportunities to strengthen bilateral economic and business ties, with emerging sectors including semiconductors, electronics, financial technology, hospitality, tourism, agriculture and infrastructure identified as areas with potential for greater cooperation.

The opportunities were discussed during a meeting between Ms. Najwa Musyrifah Ramli, Consul General of Malaysia in Mumbai, and Dr. Vijay Kalantri, President, All India Association of Industries (AIAI) and Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai, at MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai.

Ms. Ramli highlighted Malaysia’s position as a strategic gateway for Indian businesses seeking to access Southeast Asian markets, supported by its infrastructure, manufacturing ecosystem and connectivity with regional and global markets.

“Malaysia offers Indian businesses a strategic gateway to Southeast Asia, supported by its well-developed infrastructure, established manufacturing ecosystem and connectivity with regional and global markets. We see considerable scope for Indian companies to explore Malaysia as a destination for investment, regional expansion and industrial collaboration. At the same time, Malaysia is keen to deepen its engagement with Maharashtra, particularly by encouraging greater business exchanges, tourism flows and exploring potential sectors which can power our bilateral trade in the coming years,” said Ms. Najwa Musyrifah Ramli, Consul General of Malaysia in Mumbai.

Opportunities in Agriculture and Palm Oil

The discussion also highlighted opportunities and challenges in agricultural trade, particularly Malaysia’s palm oil exports to India.

Ms. Ramli noted that India’s position as a major consumer and importer of vegetable oils creates significant opportunities for Malaysian palm oil exporters. She also pointed to certification requirements and regulatory procedures as areas where greater streamlining could help facilitate market access and expand bilateral trade in agricultural commodities.

Focus on Emerging Industries

Dr. Vijay Kalantri emphasised the longstanding economic and cultural relationship between India and Malaysia and highlighted the potential for deeper cooperation in emerging industries.

“India and Malaysia share longstanding economic and cultural ties, with significant opportunities to further strengthen bilateral trade, investment and industry partnerships. Emerging sectors such as semiconductors, electronics and financial technology, alongside hospitality, tourism and agriculture, offer considerable potential for deeper cooperation. Greater engagement between businesses of both countries can help translate these opportunities into meaningful partnerships,” said Dr. Vijay Kalantri, Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai and President, All India Association of Industries (AIAI).

Dr. Kalantri also highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia in strengthening economic and cultural connections between the two countries. He pointed to Malaysia’s infrastructure expertise as another potential area for collaboration, particularly as India continues to expand its infrastructure ecosystem.

He further noted the shared relationships that India and Malaysia maintain with Gulf countries and proposed that both nations could contribute constructively towards addressing the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

Strengthening MSME and Industry Participation

Capt. Somesh Batra, Vice Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai, stressed the importance of leveraging the India–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the ASEAN–India trade framework to strengthen commercial relations, diversify bilateral trade and encourage greater participation from MSMEs in international markets.

The discussion also focused on creating greater opportunities for direct business engagement between companies and industry stakeholders from both countries.

Ms. Priya Pansare, Senior Director – Trade, Investment and International Relations, MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai, expressed the organisation’s commitment to facilitating business delegations, sector-specific interactions and networking initiatives to promote trade, investment and economic cooperation between India and Malaysia.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of continued engagement between diplomatic missions, trade promotion institutions and industry stakeholders to identify new business opportunities and strengthen India–Malaysia economic relations.
