At the recent Craft Bazaar hosted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Daman, artisan Shagufta Khanam from Nagina, Uttar Pradesh, showcased a stunning array of handmade brass and wooden jewellery. Supported by a team of 30–40 workers, Khanam’s work reflects both traditional artistry and a strong spirit of empowerment.
Beyond creating beautiful pieces, Khanam focuses on uplifting women by teaching jewellery-making skills and offering them a sustainable livelihood. Despite facing competition from cheaper, mass-produced imports, her intricate, handcrafted jewellery stands out for its authenticity and unique designs.
The craft bazaar served as an important platform for Khanam to engage directly with customers who increasingly value the craftsmanship and story behind handmade jewellery. She noted a growing appreciation among buyers for the distinction between handcrafted and machine-made products.
NIFT Daman’s Craft Bazaar reinforces the institute’s commitment to supporting artisans, preserving traditional skills, and empowering women through sustainable initiatives. Events like these play a crucial role in celebrating India’s rich artisanal heritage and fostering inclusive economic growth.
