Guess Jeans, a pioneer in denim fashion, has returned to the spotlight at Pitti with their innovative Airwash concept, replacing environmentally impactful stone washing. The brand, founded by the Marciano brothers in 1973, showcased Airwash, a technology championed by Nicolai Marciano, using light and air instead of stones and chemicals. This shift claims to cut water usage by 80% and conserve energy, marking a significant step toward sustainability.
The immersive exhibition at Teatro Del Maggio in Florence highlights Guess’s 40-year denim journey, featuring historical artifacts like the original Marilyn jeans and Michael J. Fox’s iconic denim jacket from Back to the Future. Nicolai Marciano expressed the brand’s commitment to celebrating their California lifestyle, denim legacy, and continuous product innovation.
The Airwash technology, presented in the “Stone to Air” pop-up installation, delivers a smooth finish to jeans, showcasing the brand’s dedication to environmentally conscious practices. Guess plans to launch Airwash jeans in June, accompanied by a refreshed brand image, acknowledging the changing landscape of female empowerment.
Despite challenges from the pandemic and store closures, Guess remains resilient, reporting a four-percent increase in annual sales, reaching $2.70 billion by October 2023. The brand, once boasting 2,236 stores in 2014, plans to introduce new denim-focused boutiques, showcasing their enduring commitment to denim excellence.
