New York City buzzed with the unveiling of “Ethica,” the latest collection from Guatemalan designer Juan Carlos Gordillo, at this week’s Kingpins Show. Known for his innovative upcycled denim creations, Gordillo has partnered with Cone Denim to create a line that showcases both artistic vision and a deep commitment to sustainability.

“Ethica” features hand-painted fabrics adorned with abstract floral and butterfly motifs, each piece meticulously sewn by Gordillo himself. Cone Denim provided a range of sustainable materials, including 100% cotton, recycled cotton, and TENCEL™, underscoring the collection’s eco-conscious ethos. The line includes a variety of pieces, from jackets and shirts to shorts and pants, all showcasing unique details like structural ruffles, patches, raw hems, and contrasting patchwork.

Cone Denim’s design director, Pierette Scavuzzo, expressed admiration for Gordillo’s ability to infuse culture and art into his designs, emphasizing the deliberate and intentional nature of his creative process. The collaboration sought to provide Gordillo with a platform to showcase his hand-sewn garments, particularly in today’s increasingly automated fashion landscape.

Following the design and construction phase, the garments were entrusted to Jeanologia for finishing. Utilizing laser technology and ozone bleaching, the laundry innovator enhanced the handmade feel and imparted a weathered aesthetic to the pieces. Cone Denim strategically leveraged Jeanologia’s Miami hub, streamlining the supply chain and promoting localized production. Scavuzzo highlighted the intriguing contrast and design potential of combining traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.

Gordillo’s dedication to sustainability is a consistent theme in his work, and “Ethica” demonstrates that ethical practices and high style can coexist harmoniously. The collection aims to transcend mere clothing, becoming a catalyst for change. Gordillo articulates that each piece in “Ethica” weaves a narrative of raw beauty, functional elegance, and powerful statements about quality, ethics, and sustainability. This denim, he asserts, not only adorns the body but also inspires a shift towards a more responsible future for fashion.
