She donned a cocktail dress from Christian Dior’s A/W 1959 Haute Couture line, which was created by Yves Saint Laurent, for the following round of festivities in Portofino, Italy. Carrie Bradshaw’s go-to Manolo Blahnik jeweled white Hangisi flats and a pink Hermès tiny Kelly purse completed the look.

This vibrant raspberry dress has a vertical bow at the waist and a fit-and-flare style. Christian Dior is renowned for his “New Look,” which gave plain, austere womenswear a touch of refinement and extravagance. Dior’s designs, which emphasize the feminine form, frequently include hourglass-shaped waists, shorter hemlines, and voluptuous-looking bodices.

The majority of Saint Laurent’s Dior creations are now kept in museums. His brief tenure at the House of Dior, which lasted from 1958 to 1960, produced several really valuable items that embodied the marriage of two renowned French designers. It is hardly surprising that the merchant’s dress, which was part of the A/W 1959 line, brought $3,840 at auction in 2016.

Although Merchant is dressed in fashion history, her sleeveless midi dress combines two major trends from this year’s design week. In Merchant’s outfit, elements we liked wearing as kids—like bows, frills, and all things cute—come together to create Barbiecore, a celebration of everything pink and girlie inspired by the Margot Robbie movie “Barbie.” Is the strikingly current clothing from 1959 evidence of the fashion industry’s cyclical nature? Alternatively, perhaps Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior will always remain in vogue.
