India’s leadership in sustainable fashion innovation continues to strengthen as the R|Elan Circular Design Challenge (CDC) evolves into a global platform promoting circular design and responsible practices. Developed in collaboration with the United Nations in India and Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI, the initiative supports emerging designers driving change through innovation and sustainability.
This year, CRCLE, founded by Varshne, emerged as the winner of the challenge and presented its collection ‘DIALOGUE’ at the prestigious platform. The recognition marks a significant milestone for the Chennai-based menswear label, reinforcing its commitment to circularity and conscious craftsmanship.
CRCLE’s design philosophy is rooted in building a circular ecosystem that extends beyond the lifecycle of garments. The brand reimagines modern menswear through elevated essentials that combine traditional craft techniques with contemporary silhouettes and functional detailing.
The label collaborates with over 100 artisans and more than 50 craft communities across India, integrating a diverse material library that includes naturally dyed Weganool from Auroville, handwoven Korai grass from Pattamadai, cotton from Chennimalai, and deadstock textiles from Tirupur. Additional elements such as leather offcuts, handcrafted metal buttons from Kutch, and repurposed stainless steel components reflect its commitment to material innovation and waste reduction. Within 18 months of its launch, CRCLE has recycled over 400 kilograms of textile waste while contributing to sustainable agricultural practices through by-products like Aarka.
The showcased collection ‘DIALOGUE’ explored the relationship between material, maker, and wearer, emphasising tactile textures, thoughtful construction, and longevity. Rooted in handcrafted processes, the collection reinforces the importance of adaptability and seasonless design.
Speaking about the showcase, Varshne said, “With DIALOUGE I wanted to renew the connection between the material, the maker, the wearer, and the planet. In a world of fast-paced automation, we’re returning to a more intentional rhythm where we embrace irregularities and textures as they add life and character to every piece.”
Commenting on the achievement, Hemant D Sharma, President – Polyester at Reliance Industries Limited, stated, “At Reliance, we believe that the future of fashion lies in empowering the next generation of designers to integrate circularity, sustainability and responsible material use at the heart of their creative process. Through the R|Elan™ Circular Design Challenge, we are proud to nurture emerging talent that is reimagining design with a strong focus on waste reduction and resource efficiency. We congratulate Varshne and CRCLE on this well-deserved recognition. Platforms like R|Elan™ CDC create a powerful ecosystem—bringing together innovation, mentorship and global exposure—to enable young entrepreneurs to transform circular ideas into impactful, scalable solutions for the industry.”
Stefan Priesner, United Nations Resident Coordinator, added, “UN in India is delighted to support this continued partnership between UN India, RElan, and Lakmé Fashion Week through the Circular Design Challenge. This collaboration exemplifies how the UN works with industry leaders to accelerate India’s transition toward a circular, climate-resilient economy – one that reduces waste, protects the environment, and creates green livelihoods, in support of the leadership of the Government of India in climate action”
Over the years, the R|Elan CDC has evolved into a comprehensive ecosystem offering mentorship, industry exposure, and strategic support, enabling designers to scale sustainable practices. In 2026, the platform further expands globally through an Indo-French edition in partnership with the Embassy of France in India and the French Institute in India, reinforcing cross-cultural collaboration in sustainable fashion.
With CRCLE’s showcase, the initiative continues to position India at the forefront of the global circular fashion movement, driving innovation, sustainability, and responsible design practices.
