The Cellulose Fibres Conference 2025 (CFC 2025) brought together nearly 200 participants from 22 countries in Cologne for a two-day hybrid event focused on sustainable innovation in textiles, hygiene, and packaging. Recognized as the leading platform in the cellulose fibre sector, the conference delivered cutting-edge insights, featuring dynamic discussions and high-level presentations.

Key themes included innovations in viscose, lyocell, modal, and emerging fibre types made from alternative sources like agricultural waste, recycled textiles, and biosynthetics—a category spotlighted at the event for the first time.

Sessions explored circular economy models, fibre-to-fibre recycling, biodegradability, and microplastic reduction, addressing critical environmental challenges. The event also revealed rising investments and projected capacity expansions—particularly in Lyocell production, replacing outdated viscose methods and offsetting cotton supply concerns due to climate change.

Industry leaders such as Birla Cellulose, The Fiber Year, IKEA, and CIRFS emphasized the transformative role of cellulose fibres and called for unified standards under a broader “cellulose fibres” classification to support innovation and growth.

A highlight of the event was the “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year 2025” awards, honouring three trailblazing technologies:

  1. SA-Dynamics (Germany) – Cellulose aerogel textiles with high insulation and biodegradability.

  2. Releaf Paper France (France) – Eco-fibres from fallen urban leaves for sustainable packaging.

  3. Uluu (Australia) – Seaweed-derived PHA biosynthetics to replace microplastic-laden synthetics.

Supported by sponsors including GIG Karasek, Birla Purocel, and Valmet, the event combined robust programming with unique networking moments—like an evening of German bowling that blended tradition with professional bonding.

The success of CFC 2025 underscores the growing momentum behind bio-based fibres and reinforces the industry’s commitment to sustainable transformation.
