BPCL Kochi Refinery Diamond Jubilee celebrates six decades of energy leadership and industrial innovation. Established in 1966 as Cochin Refineries Limited in collaboration with Phillips Petroleum, the refinery began with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day. Today, it operates as one of BPCL’s three major refineries, with a crude oil refining capacity of 15.5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA).

Inauguration and Key Highlights

Shri Suresh Gopi, Hon’ble Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Tourism, inaugurated the celebrations by lighting the ceremonial lamp and planting a tree. He praised the refinery for contributing to Kerala’s economic growth. Moreover, he said, “Kochi Refinery has grown as an institution of trust, supporting energy security and sustainable development while empowering thousands of families.”

Shri Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) and CMD in additional charge, highlighted the refinery’s sustainability efforts. Kochi Refinery reduced raw water consumption by 20–25% and improved its Energy Intensity Index (EII). These achievements were made possible through measures such as water recycling via Effluent Treatment Plants, cooling tower optimization, and other technological innovations.

Product Portfolio and Petrochemical Expansion

The refinery produces Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Naphtha, Motor Spirit, Kerosene, Aviation Turbine Fuel, Diesel, and Asphalt. Specialty products include Benzene, Toluene, Food Grade Hexane, Propylene, and Hydrogen. In petrochemicals, BPCL’s Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project was dedicated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in February 2021.

Additionally, BPCL is investing Rs. 5,044 crore in a new Polypropylene (PP) unit at Kochi Refinery. This facility will produce 400 kilo-tonnes per annum and utilize propylene feedstock to meet rising domestic demand for polypropylene in packaging, containers, and homeware.

BPCL Kochi Refinery Diamond Jubilee underscores six decades of operational excellence, sustainability, and socio-economic impact. The refinery continues to play a pivotal role in Kerala’s energy and industrial landscape.
