Bailou has unveiled its limited-edition Disco Saree Collection, redefining handloom sarees for contemporary celebration wear by merging traditional craftsmanship with a modern design sensibility.

Positioned as “Cocktail Sarees,” the collection moves beyond nostalgia-led narratives, presenting handloom as fluid, expressive, and relevant for today’s social settings. Rather than referencing the disco era literally, the collection captures its spirit of freedom, individuality, and movement through a refined and forward-looking aesthetic.

At the core of the collection lies the intricate Jamdani weaving technique, where motifs are created directly on the loom using an extra-weft process. Each saree is handwoven by skilled artisans, emerging as a finished textile without heavy post-production embellishments.

A defining innovation within the collection is the integration of golden sequins within the weave itself. Using a double-cloth weaving method, sequins are embedded between two fabric layers, forming delicate pockets that create a subtle interplay of light and texture. This pocket-sequin technique has been recognised with a UNESCO Seal of Excellence, highlighting its technical advancement and craftsmanship.

Additional detailing includes hand-shifted threads that create tactile surface variations, knotting techniques for structural depth, and wave-like patterns in the borders and pallus crafted using organza yarn. These elements collectively produce a dynamic textile that shifts visually with movement.

The colour palette is rooted in after-dark tones such as black, deep grey, and midnight blue, enhancing the collection’s eveningwear appeal. Against these inky bases, subtle gold accents appear suspended within the fabric, delivering understated luminosity rather than overt shine.

Produced in limited quantities, each saree is designed to feel unique, reinforcing individuality over mass replication. Beyond design, the collection reflects Bailou’s commitment to sustaining artisan ecosystems by collaborating closely with Jamdani weaving communities and supporting year-round livelihoods.

The Disco Saree Collection is available at Bailou Bombay and Byloom, Kolkata, with prices ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000.

With this launch, Bailou continues to position tradition as an evolving design language, inviting a new generation to engage with the saree as a contemporary form of expression.
