At India Couture Week on August 1, Rajesh Pratap Singh showcased a dark, bohemian interpretation of traditional clothing. The tactile, eclectic “Desert Rose” men’s and women’s couture collection offered a fresh interpretation of what couture is. Models walked down the runway wearing LED headgear as the event began with traditional singing and a runway covered with candles. What came next was a combination of opulent overcoats, dresses, and irreverent spins on tradition, including a black lehenga with a PVC-like appearance.

Men and women both wore hoods and face coverings to provide a sense of secrecy, and chain mesh face coverings and chainmail jewellery evoked images of ancient warriors. Models wore a mix of conventional braids and sheer fabrics draped in their hair, and accessories were stacked for a maximalist style.

Rajesh Pratap Singh revealed on Instagram that the collection this season marks the first time the namesake designer has used special metallic yarns. Images of Marie Antoinette, historical royalty, and traditional clothing from both North and South India were all featured on the designer’s mood board for the collection. The drama of the situation was further heightened by platform sandals and hooded capes.

The Fashion Design Council of India has assembled 16 designers for the 16th iteration of India Couture Week. Each designer will present a collection in New Delhi over the course of nine days, with the Taj Palace serving as the main venue. The fashion week, which is sponsored by Hyundai, lasts from July 25 to August 2. The event is sponsored by Reliance Brands Limited, and among the designers taking part are Rimzim Dadu, Suneet Varma, Ritu Kumar, Gaurav Gupta, and Tarun Tahiliani.
